The Lac La Biche Shuffle

Pallets 2
Volunteers sort pallets of food at Lac La Biche Transport

Thousands of people in Lac La Biche County have signed up around the clock to be at The Bold Centre; many have opened their homes, campsites, hotels/motels, community centres and churches for shelter, food, counselling, and more; donations have come pouring in, and yup: volunteers are there too sorting, stacking, delivering and sorting some more; coordinators are busy every minute either in person or on cell phones making sure lines of communication are open, plans are available to everyone, & backup plans are in the bullpen; volunteers are even at local stores helping stock shelves to keep enough food, supplies & clothing in the local area; and, you got it: I had my amazing crew helping me sort 25,ooolbs of food from Edmonton Food Banks/Alberta Food Banks Association.

What’s today? Saturday? We’re four days in… five days in…?

There’s a curious movement I’m noticing in all of the superstar volunteers around me. As the days wear on and we lose count I can see it in the people next to me, in people walking down the street, in people I meet at the grocery stores: we’re all doing the Lac La Biche Shuffle.

It’s a tired, exhausted kind of walk; but it’s a walk where we’re all still holding our heads high, our eyes — bleary with lack of sleep — are still bright with focus knowing what needs to be done (& getting it done!), and our smiles are still strong. It’s a strange but powerful kind of walk; one that we recognize in one another. A walk of weariness, but a walk of compassion and commitment that tells the world:

“We ain’t quittin’ for nothin’.”

That’s the Lac La Biche Shuffle.

I often post meaningful songs here. Music is a vital part of my own spirituality and, especially during times of crisis or pain, it brings needed healing. I’ve shared this song before, but I want to share it again specifically for my fellow community members. We are being who we need to be; and we’ll be who we need to be for as long as it takes. I salute your LLB Shuffle, knowing it’s a well-earned walk of pride and love. Maybe this tune encourage you today in every way that you need it to.

“One Voice”

This is the sound of one voice
One spirit, one voice
The sound of one who makes a choice
This is the sound of one voice

This is the sound of voices two
The sound of me singing with you
Helping each other to make it through
This is the sound of voices two

This is the sound of voices three
Singing together in harmony
Surrendering to the mystery
This is the sound of voices three

This is the sound of all of us
Singing with love and the will to trust
Leave the rest behind it will turn to dust
This is the sound of all of us

This is the sound of one voice
One people, one voice
A song for every one of us
This is the sound of one voice
This is the sound of one voice
