I watched this video and realized that it was from about 1982 — I was only 4 years old. My little sister wasn't even born yet.
And I remember the same messages she talks about: "Children are the future. Children will grow into tomorrow's leaders"… and so on. I remember them well. I remember feeling somewhat empowered that I would be able to fix the world someday.
I also remember thinking what this girl did.
Why was it up to me to fix the world when the 'trusted grownups' around me had the power to do it NOW?
Why were they breaking everything???
Today, I am 31. And still feel like the grownups who could so easily give, give, give, and give some more and help, help, help fix the mess we're in are relatively indifferent to the dying around them.
…now there are fewer and fewer children to inspire to "be the future". They are being taken, kidnapped, starved, exploited, hurt, abused, rejected, despised and killed.
It is true that our humanity has always existed in a sphere of violence to one degree or another. But there are more slaves in the world today than there ever was during the entire Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade combined.
27 million is the low and modest estimate.
50% are believed to be children.
And we still expect our children to 'fix' things?
We are killing our fixers and destroying the very thing we expect them to fix.
There will be nothing left.
If you are in kindergarten, never forget how to treat others… if you are in high school, know that you can change this world — OUR world — NOW, and never forget how to treat others… if you are climbing the corporate ladder, know that your influence can shape hope, and never forget how to treat others… if you are a stay-at-home mom, teach your children to be world-changers NOW, and never forget how to treat others… if you are eighty years old, remember your lessons from grade school: never forget how to treat others.
WE ALL are world-changers. No more waiting.
