Hershey has declared Monday, August 10 as NATIONAL S'MORE DAY. Since Hershey has not recognized the need for Fair Trade and still engages in business practices that involve child labour, I encourage all of you to call them this Monday.
Explain why you will NOT be purchasing their products as part of their oh-so-delightful holiday, why Fair Trade is needed, and the reality of slave labour in places like Cote D'Ivoire and Ghana. 40% of the world's cocoa is produced in West Africa and Hershey is no exception. As one of the largest chocolate manufacturers in the world, Hershey needs to take far more corporate and human responsibility for its actions and practices.
If you want to participate in National S'more Day, purchase Fair Trade Chocolate from places like Endangered Species… Green and Black… Cocoa Camino…
Make sure the marshmallows you use were made using Fair Trade sugar (also a big plantation item).
Invite your friends! I have not met a person yet who has gone back to mainline industry chocolate after choosing Fair Trade.
The little things make all the difference!
